The end of the 1st half of 2021 reveals a strong recovery of the Brazilian furniture industry compared to the same period last year

While eyes from different areas and from different parts of the world turn to the furniture market due to the special edition of the biggest event in the sector on the planet, Salone del Mobile.Milano, IEMI – Market Intelligence launches the updated version of the “ Conjuntura de Móveis”, a monthly report commissioned by ABIMÓVEL – The Brazilian Furniture Manufacturers Association. 

Presenting general data for the end of the first half of 2021, both in production and in furniture retail in Brazil, the latest Conjuntura reveals a slight decline in furniture production in June, when around 31.3 million pieces were assembled. Despite representing a drop of -1.2% compared to the previous month, however, this number remains above the 30 million mark, considered a significant performance for the domestic furniture industry.

As a result, the accumulated outcome for the first half, that is, from January to June this year, increased by +31.7% compared to the same period last year. A higher result than the accumulated up to the month of May (+29.5%), pointing to consistency in the furniture industry, which reached revenue of R$ 6.6 billion in June: a decrease of -0.3% over the previous month and a significant increase +72.1% year-to-date compared to the results of the first half of 2020, considering the delicate situation experienced by the industry during the first wave of the pandemic in Brazil.

It is also important to highlight the average furniture production price in the period, which was R$ 211.50 per piece in June 2021: an increase of +0.9% compared to the previous month and +9 .7% in the year.

 

Industry indicators

Other important indicators in the Brazilian furniture industry are related to productivity and employment, with the latter growing +0.3% in the month of June compared to May. In the accumulated result for the year, there was an increase of +7.4% in the volume of occupied vacancies in the furniture industry when compared to the same period of the previous year.

The number of working hours was also higher in June, both compared to May of the same year (+0.7%) and in comparison with the accumulated in the first half of 2020 (+21.7%). Labor productivity, however, experienced a drop of -1.9% month-on-month and -3.7% when comparing the first six months of this year to last year.

When it comes to investment in the factory floor, however, imports of machinery showed a positive evolution of +76.6% in the accumulated result up to July 2021 in relation to the same period in 2020. A great indication for the future of the furniture industry, which invests in technology and in constant updates to meet the national market with quality and also compete efficiently in the global market.

Retail Indicators

Speaking of meeting market demand, by the way, furniture sales in Brazil fell -3.9% in volume in June 2021 compared to the previous month. In the year, however, the index continues to show progress, with an increase of +17.5% in the first half of 2021 over the same semester in 2020 and +22.1% in the last 12 months (June 2020 – June 2021 ).

When we talk about revenue, retail furniture sales totaled R$8.6 million in June 2021. Another drop in the month-on-month comparison (-3.6%), but presenting growth both year-to-date (+11) .3%) and in 12 months (+23.3%).

For contextualization purposes, considering the retail behavior both in terms of volume of pieces and in revenue, growth is observed throughout the Southern region of Brazil; while in the Southeast there is a downward trend in the monthly variation.
